I AM HARRIET TUBMAN by Brad Meltzer / Blog Tour: Book Review #OrdinaryPeopleChangeTheWorld

Welcome to the first stop in the I AM HARRIET TUBMAN blog tour, hosted by Penguin Kids. The, Ordinary People Change The World series is a fantastic series for young readers. It teaches them about iconic, historical people, and makes it relatable for their age. The newest releases in a series I highly recommend picking up, is one of our favorite historical heroines.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Harriet Tubman's heroic and pivotal role in the fight against slavery is the subject of the fourteenth picture book in this New York Times bestselling biography series
This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume focuses on Harriet Tubman's brave heroism as part of the movement to abolish slavery. As one of the key players in the Underground Railroad, she helped enslaved African Americans escape and find freedom.

Another fantastic book is a series that's perfect for young readers, as much as it is for older readers. Like the rest of the books in this series, it takes readers back into the time period each of these iconic heroes lived in. It introduces readers to historical figures who were ordinary people, just like them, that did extraordinary things, just like they can do.

I AM Harriet Tubman is one of our favorites. That may have to do with the fact that this is a women both my daughter and I greatly admired. She is the kind of woman that you want to aspire to be. Her story is one I am glad to see apart of this series. It's one that will hopefully inspire young readers to make the change they want to see made. Regardless of how scary that may be.

Harriet Tubman is a woman who did extraordinary things. Her story is one that needs to be read, and taught. She's a true example of courage. She over came horrendous things, and did some of the most extraordinary things. She changed the world in which is was apart of, even if no one else thought it was possible. She's proof at how one person can and does make a difference. She never gave up, and in doing something so extraordinary, she saved countless people.

Like the other books in this series, this is another incredible story that should be included in libraries, whether at home or school. Young readers will fall in love with history, and discover heroes and heroines who have done some really extraordinary thing. This is one book I highly recommend picking up!

Two of my favorite quotes from this book is:

"... You must follow your heart - your own North Star. It will always point you in the right direction."

"In every life, we face hard decisions. At those times, we can make the safe choice... or the right choice."

  1. Harriet Tubman is a new name to me (I'm Canadian, don't judge) but the more I learn about her, the more I admire her. Glad to see her getting more recognition!

I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves. ~ Anna Quindlen

Good children's literature appeals not only to
the child in the adult, but to the adult in the child.
